Khabib Nurmagomedov literally wrestled with bears when he was young. Nurmagomedov grew up in Dagestan, where as a nine year old boy, his father led him out towards the edge of the forest, where a bear cub was chained to a nearby tree. His dad then turned on a handheld camera, pointed it at his son, and ordered him to the wrestle the animal. Khabib, even at that young age displayed technique and heart.

The PRIDE ruleset was also more permissive than UFC MMA, permitting soccer kicks, stomps and knees to downed opponents and body slams directly in the head ("spiking").
